【Travel Information】Mendut Temple
A Buddhist temple that was built by Shailendra dynasty, a Buddhist dynasty that built Borobudur temple. It is considerd that this temple was built slightly earlier than Borobudur Temple in around 8th century.
The buidling size is 13.7m x 13.7m square, 26.4m high.
Since middle of 19th century, this temple began to be discovered, and the accumulation of soil and weeds around the temple began to be removed. Resotraction by Dutch was operated twice in 1897 and 1901-1904.
There are carvings of Jataka, the birth story of Siddhartha Gautama on the outer wall, also there are Bodhisattva on the temple wall and Vaisravana and Hariti on the stairwall.
In the temple hall there is a large stone Buddha statue and two Bodhisattava statues. The Buddha statue in the center is especially famous as one of the masterpiece of Buddhist arts of Asia.
If you saw from above, Borobudur Temple, Pawon Temple and this temple are located in a straight line. It is speculated that it is closely related to Borobudur temple. This temple is a part of UNESCO World Heritage Site “Borobudur Temple Complex” that was resistered in 1991 as an Indonesian First World Heritage Site.
And Mendut Temple is important place for Waisak as sama as Borobudur Temple.
On Waisak Day, many Buddhist monks gathered to this temple from early morning. Parade to Borobudur Temple starts from here.

How to get there
There is no public transportation that goes to this temple directly but this temple is located just on the road Borobudur-Yogyakarta. If you take a local bus coming Borobudur from Yogyakarta, you can ask your bus driver to let you get off near Mendut Temple.
You can access to this temple by cars, motorbikes, bicycles etc easily from center of Borobudur too.
From Borobudur, it takes 10 menites by car.
From Yogyakarta, it takes about 1 hour by car.
